An Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) Watch With Circular Display Could Soon Be A Reality

The Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) Watch could soon have a round face. This emerged after patent applications that were published Thursday revealed that the Cupertino tech giant was considering an Apple Watch with Circular Display. The patent applications published by the USPTO – the United States Patent and Trademark Office, bore the title ‘Electronic device having display with curved edges’ and were initially filed 12 months ago while the revised ones were filed 11 months ago.

No guarantee there will be an Apple Watch with Circular Display

A patent application by Apple is, however, not a guarantee of a product in the offing. The consumer electronics giant is in the habit of applying for patents on a regular basis, of which the larger majority are yet to see the light of day. Doubts about Apple’s intentions have additionally been raised by the fact that the largest company in the world by market capitalization has already committed to having a rectangular chassis design and a rectangular display with its Apple Watch.

Details from the Apple Watch with Circular Display patent shows that if the product comes to fruition, it will bear some resemblance to current Apple products with regards to the display. Similar to the displays found in the current Apple Watch, the iPad, and the iPhone, the patent revealed a display consisting of an array of pixels lined up in rows and columns. To avoid unused space at the edges, a problem that does not exist with a square or a rectangular shape, the lengths of the pixel rows and columns would be staggered.

“However, rectangular pixel arrays will not fit efficiently within a device having a circular shape. It would, therefore, be desirable to be able to provide improved displays such as circular displays or displays with curved edges,” noted Apple engineers in the patent filing.

Evolving display designs

At the onset of the smartwatch phase, most displays tended to look like miniature smartphone displays. With time, however, smartwatch makers began coming up with semi-circular and circular designs in a bid to distinguish themselves. Only time will tell if the Apple Watch with Circular Display will follow suit.
