Connecticut State Police were conducting a spot check for motorists driving under the influence when a cruiser was struck at about 9 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 84 westbound, at Exit 18 in Southbury.

Grant said the vehicle "observed the spot check, backed down the off-ramp and struck the state police cruiser in the process".

According to police, the evading vehicle did not stop after striking the cruiser and continued into Waterbury. Although it sustained moderate damage, they were able to drive it back to police barracks from the scene.

The evading vehicle is a newer model silver Infinity, 4 door sedan, with a CT license plate. The vehicle will have passenger side damage from the front end to the rear.
