A number of memorial concerts have been organized in the star's name.

Rock legend David Bowie suffered six heart attacks before his death, one of his biographers has claimed.

Figures from global streaming service Spotify show there was a jump of 2,822% in Bowie songs played in the hours after his death was announced.

Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney and Rolling Stones frontman Sir Mick Jagger were also among the artists who remembered him.

"And I spoke with David about it and he said: "Absolutely that's the right decision... but I often wonder what might have been".

"I thought that I wrote songs and wrote music and that was sort of what I thought I was the best at doing".

"We will take to the grave the moments we shared - talking, playing music and collaborating - as some of the most profound and memorable moments of our lives". Never have. I can do it and, if my mind's on the situation, do it quite well.

David Bowie, who died late last night, was "mind-blowingly talented" but also "an incredibly nice person", Conan O'Brien said on tonight's show by way of introducing a clip package on Bowie's visits to Conan's various talk shows over the years, and a look at Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and Thin White Duke eras, among others.

"Who knows, but we're sure you'll want to join us in congratulating him on both. The world will miss you".
