A total of 59 flights were canceled at SFO, and the average flight delay, as of 7 a.m., was more than three hours, the FAA's flight tracker system reported.
There are a little more than 22,000 flights scheduled to, from, or even within the United States, according to FlightAware.
If you are flying, it is advised to call the airline before you head to the airport. Saturday travel looked no better, with 3,458 flights canceled in advance.
American Airlines has canceled all flights arriving and departing from Charlotte, including six flights from PBIA and 15 flights from Fort Lauderdale.
The carrier also says it is reviewing its Saturday services to and from New York's Newark and JFK, but warns of "significant disruption to our schedules".
"We have a maintenance and operational department that is prepared and trained on how to handle winter weather and what to do to keep our runway open and operational", Alexandra Bradley, with Asheville Regional Airport, said.
