The quake rocked Manipur around 4.30 am with its epicentre at Kabui Khulen, 10 km from Noney sub-division of Manipur's Tamenglong district, official sources said.

Church properties in Manipur, northeast India, suffered heavy damage after a major quake shook the state, killing at least nine people and injuring more than 100 people.

The tremor was felt in Manipur, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and some other states.

Unicef is monitoring the situation for children in India following a 6.8 magnitude natural disaster that has struck the north-eastern state of Manipur, near to the border with Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Police and hospitals in Imphal said the toll had reached six dead, with 100 people injured, 33 of them seriously. A defence official said an AN32 plane of the Air Force was going to Imphal from Guwahati with 75 NDRF personnel for relief and rescue operations.

Three people were killed in Imphal, the capital of Manipur state, and another three in other parts of the state, said police officer A.K. Jalajit. "Damages to a few buildings, residential units and government offices have been reported, including damage to a six-storey building", a home ministry statement said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that he had spoken to the region's chief ministers and federal Home Minister Rajnath Singh "on the situation arising in the wake of the earthquake".

Despite the severe weather, people are spending the night in the open beside log fires as houses have collapsed and aftershocks continued through the day. A number of buildings, walls and bridges collapsed or were damaged. Seven persons were killed, while about 70 persons sustained injuries.

The Home Minister briefed Prime Minister Modi over phone about the situation and the steps taken for rescue and relief.

Several neighbouring countries felt tremors too.

Imphal resident Leika Yumnam, who works with a local social service organization, said she was jolted from her sleep by the tremors. In order to assess the safety of partially-damaged public buildings and advise the state government on issues related to fix and retrofitting of these buildings, NDMA is deploying a team of experts.
