If he does, Hayne is the most likely player to make way after a modest performance against the Detroit Lions on Monday.

"He continues to work his tail off and get better", Tomsula said, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

Hence, Hayne could start again against the Rams, with the rest of the team's running backs injury-sidelined.

Tomsula said he is keen to play Davis, who will practice this week with the first team after two months out with a broken hand.

"I'd like him to be", Tomsula, when asked if he expected Davis to be available, told reporters at Wednesday's press conference.

Kendall Gaskins and DuJuan Harris are the 49ers' other options at running back.

NFL Hall of Famer Roger Craig believes the San Francisco 49ers should give Jarryd Hayne another shot at playing American football next season. "He knows the assignments but would I tell you that it is absolutely natural to him yet? No".

Tomsula said Hayne, who has immersed himself in the 49ers' playbook since arriving at the National Football League team's Santa Clara headquarters in April, knows what he needs to do at walk-throughs at practice and in team meetings.

The coach used the example of situations where two linebackers line up against Hayne and quarterback Blaine Gabbert.

Draughn filled in admirably following the losses of Carlos Hyde (foot) and Reggie Bush (knee) for the season, racking up 76 carries for 263 yards, 25 catches (on 32 targets) for 175 yards, and one rushing touchdown over the course of six games between Weeks 9 and 15.

"If you put him on a board and put him in a walk through, he knows it", Tomsula said.
